Bard PowerPort Injury Claims

Implanted port catheters used for chemotherapy and IV treatment have fractured, migrated, and caused serious infections and blood clots.

What happened

The Bard PowerPort and similar implanted port devices are placed under the skin to give medical teams easy vascular access for chemotherapy and other infusions. Lawsuits allege the catheter material can degrade and fracture inside the body, sending fragments toward the heart, and that design flaws contribute to serious bloodstream infections, blood clots, and vessel damage — often requiring emergency surgery to remove the device or retrieve fragments.

Litigation status: More than 3,500 cases are pending in the federal MDL (No. 3081). The first bellwether trial in 2026 ended in a partial defense verdict with the jury deadlocked on design defect, and additional bellwether trials are scheduled through 2026 and into 2027. The litigation remains active and new cases are being accepted.
